Motion of electrons in the presence of obliquely propagating Alfven waves

AbstractIt is commonly believed that Alfven waves (AWs) exist pervasively in the solar atmosphere as well as the solar wind. In recent years, it is found that parallel propagating AWs can give rise to an oscillatory motion of electrons along the ambient magnetic field and therefore lead to a novel electron-cyclotron maser emission. This paper, however, investigates the motion of electrons in the presence of obliquely propagating AWs. The results from numerical study show that the influence of perpendicular wave number on motion of electrons is negligible in large range of AW propagation angle. We also obtain the approximate analytical solution to the equation of motion for electrons, which should be helpful for us to understand the motion of electrons with obliquely propagating AWs.
